What to Wear for a Photo Session

The age old question "What should I wear for my photo session".  Everyone asks it and everyone stresses over it.  In this post I am going to give you some Do's and some Don't for what to wear for your upcoming photo sessions

Do's:

1.  Coordinate but don't match - Choose a basic color palette and have everyone choose different tonal ranges in that palette.  You can have one person that stands out with a patter in their outfit.  The rest of the groups outfits can be based around that outfit including accessories, but everyone else should be more neutral.  Patterns are good in moderation.

2.  Accessorize - Scarves, hats, flowers in the hair for girls, jewelry, sweaters, vests, jackets, etc.  These can all take a so-so image and make it feel polished.  Don't let the items overwhelm the subject or the photos though.

3.  Shoe - Yes they do matter!  Shoes can make or break an outfit.  Sneakers should be avoided unless they truly compliment the outfit.

4.  Where will you be hanging your photos?  Be sure to take into consideration where you want to hang your photos.  You don't want to wear colors that will not go with the room you plan to put the images in.

5.  Be comfortable - It is very important to feel good in your clothes and be able to move in them.  Also think about the location you will having your session, you don't want to dress formal for an outdoor natural light session.  Dress to go with your session location and to compliment that location.

Don'ts:

1.  Avoid logos, graphics, characters, labels, etc.  They are distracting and usually do not photograph well.  There are instances where this rule can be broken as long as it fits the theme of the session.

2.  Don't get a haircut right before a session.  Try to go at least a week before so it has a little time to grow out to look natural.

3.  Don't all wear the same color, that is boring and dates a photo.  And please do not put everyone in khaki pants, or all in denim and all in white or black shirts.  Coordinate don't match!

4.  Try to avoid obvious trends that will be dated soon.  You can do fashion forward while still being timeless.

Hope these tips help you find the perfect outfit for your session!

Lovey Dovey

So I decided I wanted to tweak my shooting style a little.  I want more emotion out of my session.  So of course I needed someone to help me practice and get what I wanted.  So I called up some friends of mine.  When I explained what I wanted and showed them my ideas I said bring your "lovey dovey" faces.  Well that caused lots of laughter and believe it or not I got those lovey dovey faces, even though they swore they didn't do lovey dovey faces.  Thanks again so much Meg and Ferg for letting me practice on you guys.  I loved how the images turned out!

Santa Session - Why choose a photographer over the Mall

Photos with Santa are a magical experience for kids.  Santa mini sessions with KRP Photography and Santa Rock of DE are a one of a kind experience and make memories that will last a lifetime.

So why choose a professional photographer over the mall for your Santa photos.

Mall                                                      VS                   Custome Photo Session
-You are rushed with Santa                                        - You have 30 minutes of one on one time
- You only get 1 pose option for prints                     - You get multiple poses
- Only get to sit on Santas lap                                   - You get to walk and play with Santa
- Have to wait in long lines                                        - No line to wait in you book the time you want
- Cant do pets & kids together                                  - Pets are welcome, Families too, not just kids
- Different Santa each location/year                          - We use the same awesome Santa each year

Session Tips:

1.  Trust the Pros - Santa is a pro and has been taking photos with kids for years!  Trust Santa to
bring out the smiles from them.  Dont stress about it before your session, your child can sense
that and could become scared of Santa.

2.  Read Santa Books - If your little one has stranger anxiety, start reading Santa books a few days
before the visit.  Build up the excitement and get your little one used to Santa

3.  Prevent the figits - Dont dress your kids in something uncomfortable.  While cute outfits make
great photos, you dont want it to stop the smiles.  Find a mix of adorable and comfortable.

4.  Stage the Set with Positivity - Try not to say "Dont be afraid" or "Santa isnt going to hurt you."
Again let Santa do the warm up work.  Private sessions means we have time.  Santa will work
with your child to eliminate the fear.

5.  Embrace the tears - There will be many years of Santa visits when your child is overjoyed at
meeting him.  If you child is little and starts to cry - enjoy it.  The most memorable visits are the
photos with the giant screams.  If it is you this year, enjoy... it will most likely only be once.

The Holidys are quickly approaching.

Because You were there too!!!

Everyone knows how important it is to document life, capture memories for our families because the years are fleeting.  You need to be in the pictures as well.

So you don't like you photo taken?  Neither do I!!!  Get over it! Get dolled up so you feel great, it will help you want to get in front of the camera.  No matter what you look like your kids wont care.  They just want to know who you were, what you like and what you looked like at 20, 25, 30, 30, 50 and on.  Also they want to see you interacting with them in photos.  Do it before its too late, time is not guaranteed.  Photo's remind us of loved ones once they are no longer with us and of those great times we once had.

Need ideas how to take self portraits?  Here are some tips.

1.  Use a Tripod
Not necessary item, but definitely makes it easier.

2.  Choose your setting, then your settings
Prep the area you will be shooting.  Be sure it is not cluttered.  Pay attention to the light and
cameras vantage point.  Set your aperture, ISO, Shutter & White Balance.

3.  Pre Focus
Very Important step.  Have someone or something in frame where you will be, set focus, change
to Manual Focus to lock the focus.  The Shoot

4.  Close Down
Use a smaller aperture then you normally would if were behind the camera.  This will help ensure
everyone is in focus.  (5.6 is a good starting point)

5.  Use a Remote &/or the timer
This will allow you to sit relaxed and get the shots you want.  An there's no running to beat the
shutter!  Take series of photos to show interactions.

6.  Don't Always be Serious
Have fun! Make faces, let kids pose/come up with ideas, try new things.  Just be sure to have fun!

They don't even have to be elaborate photos.  Use a point and shoot or cell phone and do the whole arm extended group shot.  As long as you are together in the photo that's what matters!  So get out there take some photos and enjoy making memories.

Another option is to hire your favorite photographer and have them do the work for you and then you can just enjoy the process and end results!!!

How to get Natural Smiles from Children

Everyone has that moment where you are all set for you photos, hair is done, clothes are pressed and clean, you have the perfect location and then you get ready to take the photo and you get that wonderful cheesy smile.  The one everyone has gotten at some point ( even myself as a professional photography get that smile from my son).

You think to yourself how can I get a real smile.  Here are a few tips.
1.  Act Silly - Do anything to make them laugh for real, sing a silly song, make faces, jump around.
The sillier you feel the better response you will probably get.
2.  Don't Say Cheese - Say anything else, pickles, pizza, puppies, etc
3.  Don't Smile ( or do any face BUT smile) - tell the kids not to smile and usually they start to laugh
or have them make their favorite silly face, then you make yours and it should cause the giggles.
4.  Make the session fun! - take breaks, make it a game, run around all the things to keep the kids
busy but ready to take a photo here and there.
5.  Seeing is believing - if all else fails show them a photo of the silly smile and a good smile so they
can see the difference in the two.

Traveling Studio

Did you know that KRP Photography offers a traveling studio.  I do not have an actual studio space, I bring the studio to you.  I have lights, backgrounds and props that I pack up and come to your home.  This helps provide a calming, comfortable feel to your portrait session.  No dragging the kids out to an unfamiliar place or taking your newborn out into the nasty weather.  You don't have to leave the comfort of your home!So even though its cold outside you can still have beautiful photos taken, right in your home!

Here is an example of the traveling studio setup:

How to Prepare for your Photo Session

So you found a photographer you like and have booked your session.  Now you have a few decisions to make.

1.  Choose your session style -
      A.  Formal - Usually done in a studio and everyone is dressed up

  B.  Casual - Can be done in a studio or at an outdoor location.  Everyone usually wears
            comfortable everyday clothes.

So as you can see the style of your session has a big impact on how your photos will look and the feel they will have when on display.

2.  The next choice you have to make is your location.  Usually you can choose between a studio or on location setting such as a park, your house, the beach, etc.

3.  Then you need to choose the clothing everyone will wear.  Everyone does not have to match in exact colors or patterns.  You want to coordinate with a pop of an accent color but not match.

                                                                        Formal sample:

Casual Sample:

4.  The last thing to think about is if you want a theme, like valentines, super hero, etc and what poses you would like to try.

Be sure to contact your photographer before you session to review all these item so everyone is on the same page and your session will go smoothly.  Its a great feeling when you get the photo of your family that you wanted!

What to Wear for Fall Mini Session

Ok you have booked your Fall Mini Session, now the task of picking out the wardrobe.  Don't worry.  Remember to dress like your normal selves so everyone is comfortable.

Here are a few tips to help you decide what to wear:

1. Decide on a Color Scheme
The first thing I ask when someone seeks advice on colors to wear, I ask where they plan to hang the portraits in their home, and what colors are in that room. For some people, this doesn’t make a difference. But for others, if they plan to hang the prints in their family room that is painted red and black, and you plan to wear orange and brown, it won’t work very well. If your room is neutral (like mine) and you’d like some color pop from the portraits, and you just need help deciding on colors, here are a few thoughts.

2. Select one focal piece
If you have a color palette in mind, or even if you don’t…shop around to find one patterned piece that you love. It can be a little girls floral dress or a boys plaid shirt, but if you find one central piece, it helps to plan everything around that. Since us moms like our kids to be the focal point, I’d suggest this focus piece to be on one of the children (not an adult). That doesn’t mean that they will stand out the most, after accessorizing (my next  point) it will all flow together.

3. Pick 3
It’s a good idea to pick 3 colors to work with as your main colors, then consider grays, whites, blacks, or browns as freebie’s. Not necessarily all of them together, but one or two that work with the 3 colors you chose.

4. Layers & Accessories
Cardigan, necklace, headband, scarf, button up shirt, tights, hats, ties. Layers & accessories add dimension, pizazz, fun, texture and therefore richness to the overall look. In the past, I have had the problem of purchasing all of these in my color palette (while keeping the receipts very close by) and once I have the clothing planned out, start throwing in accessories to see what works. If I have 2 girls, they don’t both get yellow headbands, but one yellow and  one blue to spread out the colors. If you notice on my boys in the image above, they both have undershirts to provide another layer. Boys have fever options when it comes to layers (and seem more difficult to dress). I often try to put my 2 boys in two types of shirts and layer them differently. One a button up with t-shirt underneath, the other a polo type with T underneath and maybe sleeves rolled up into each other. Below, I found a vest that fit.

5. Mom’s, don’t give yourself the leftovers
You know how some moms will go around the dinner table and make sure everyone has all of their food situated before they sit down, and then their food is cold? Don’t be that mom when it comes to clothing for your family portraits. Don’t pick everyone else’s out, then just grab something from your closet that only looks “ok” on you, but matches the color scheme. You need to feel AWESOME in your family pictures! If anything, I’d pick something that you think looks fabulous on you, then plan around THAT!  It’s tough enough to get mothers IN pictures, so when you are in them, you want to feel and look good!

6. Split up the colors
If I’ve got 6 people in my family, and have selected 3 main colors, I don’t want all of those colors on top, nor to the people that are close in age–I want to split them up. I want to weigh some color towards the bottom in one or two of them as well.  I do this with shoes, skirts, and pants. There are so many more options now with those fun colorful jeans. I did also purchase a pair of red converse for my son for our pictures last December that hasn’t been worn much since–but darn-it they looked awesome in the picture!  You aren’t just investing in a photographer, but in the clothing to enhance your awesome family.

7. Lay it on the floor
Once you have gathered items in the colors you’ve picked, I try to find a spot in my home that I can keep it all out. I like to lay the pieces on the floor, and look at it from afar, take a picture of it.

8. Split up the pairs
If you have natural pairs in the family: mom and dad, Brothers, sisters, Mom and baby, try to split up the colors, as they will often be standing near each other. When I have babies, I know I will want to be holding them (helps me look thinner) so I see my baby as my “pair” and aim to not dress us alike. My husband is my obvious other pair, and as the two tallest, I have to make sure he and I are also not “matchy-matchy.” This part can get complicated, so do your best, then let it go!  Hopefully the photographer will notice this and split everyone according to the colors. But ultimately, the natural/candid shots that I like to take won’t be so planned out.

10. Plan ahead
Make sure you start this planning when you book your session (hopefully a few weeks before it takes place). Be thinking of it, look around in your home/closets, shop well in advance so you aren’t stressing at the last minute.

Just remember to be comfortable and have fun!!!
